On December 1st, which is just over a month away, the construction industry will face an important milestone under Local Law 196, one that will have a major impact on all subcontractors. By that point, all construction workers must have received 30 hour OSHA training in order to work on a site in New York City. If you have not already done so, please familiarize yourself with the rules and deadlines. NYC Buildings website is a great resource for reminders and information. In addition, I urge you to read the article in this newsletter by Total Safety Consulting (TSC), which gives a comprehensive review of the safety training law. By the way, TSC also offers STA members a discount on their services (more info can be found on the STA Membership Benefits & Discounts page).

Please be aware that select GC’s will soon be requiring that subcontractors who have more than 5 workers on a job have one person in the crew with 62 hours of safety training. This is not a New York City mandate, but just another instance of GC’s shoveling you know what downhill, since most of the additional training requirements have nothing to do with safety for the individual tradesperson. Be that as it may, this is something to pay attention to.

On a different note, 2019 is quickly coming to a close. While we have finished our General Membership Meetings for the remainder of the year, we will have a Holiday Party on December 5th to bid farewell to another great year with the association. Please feel free to come and invite colleagues from your STA member companies. Email Sam to register at ssweeney@stanyc.com.

Thank you,

Robert Weiss
